Xianluo Island

Introduction

Xianluo Island, also known as Xianluo Island Scenic Area, is a renowned artificial island located 1 kilometer off the eastern coast of the Nandaihe Tourist and Vacation Zone in Qinhuangdao city, Hebei province. Covering a total area of 16,000 square meters, this scenic spot derives its name from the legend of the Sea Conch Fairy. The island was constructed in October 1998 by the Nandaihe Development Zone Administrative Committee with the aim of fully utilizing marine tourism resources, thus marking a significant milestone in Qinhuangdao's geographic history.

The island's unique geographical and climatic conditions distinguish it as a prime tourism destination. Its underwater topography is notably flat, and the changes in sediment deposition along its shores remain relatively stable. Xianluo Island is subject to a warm temperate, semi-humid continental monsoon climate, characterized by pleasant summers with an average temperature of approximately 23°C, and colder winters with January temperatures averaging around -10°C. The area receives an average annual precipitation of 650 millimeters.

Geography

Xianluo Island lies within a region surrounded by tourism-centric areas, including the Beidaihe Recreation Zone, Nandaihe Recreation and Tourist Zone, and the Nandaihe Tourist and Vacation Zone. Xianluo Island's geographic design offers a blend of natural and man-made marvels. The sightseeing island, covering 7,000 square meters, is rectangular in shape, measuring 100 meters in length and 70 meters in width. The island's ground elevation stands at 3.5 meters above sea level. Visitors to the island can explore various attractions, including the Sea Conch Fairy, Bell Tower, Three Passes Path, Sea in the Sea, Windmill Cluster, Water Monster Cart, Seven Stars, Parachute Platform, Pier, Nine Pine Trees, Viewing Corridor, Dragon Going to Sea, and the Seafood Gourmet City.

History

In October 1998, spurred by the desire to develop the area's tourism industry and utilize its marine resources, the Nandaihe Development Zone Administrative Committee initiated the construction of Xianluo Island, an artificial island for sightseeing, thus rewriting Qinhuangdao's history as an island-less region. The island was built in a shallow sea area 1,000 meters offshore, with a planned area of 7,000 square meters and an investment of 1 billion yuan. A 1,038-meter-long cross-sea cableway connecting the island to the mainland was also established the same year.

By 2000, the construction of a 70-meter-high sea sightseeing and entertainment tower was completed, offering facilities for activities like bungee jumping, parachuting, and rafting, further enhancing the island's appeal as a tourist destination. In 2015, Xianluo Island invested 3 million yuan to introduce new entertainment projects such as pirate ships, whirlwind flying chairs, drifting bumper cars, and children's excavators, continually evolving to meet the interests of modern tourists.

Biodiversity

Xianluo Island, while primarily known for its cultural and recreational attractions, is also situated in a region rich in marine biodiversity. The surrounding Bohai Sea provides a habitat for various marine species, supporting both the local ecosystem and the livelihood of nearby fishing communities. The island's proximity to the Bohai Sea means that it benefits from a diverse range of marine life. Local fishermen primarily harvest sea products such as crabs, mantis shrimp, scallops, swallow fish, bass, catfish, butterfish, and octopus. These species not only contribute to the biodiversity of the region but also form the basis of the island's local cuisine, with dishes like grilled prawns being a specialty.
